Enough, Speak Up: The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

“One day, she will tell you that she has had enough.”

TODAY is the day “SHE will TELL you that she has had ENOUGH“.

Today, November 25, is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW). In the Philippines, IDEVAW is the beginning of an 18-day campaign that would culminate on December 12, the Anti-Trafficking of Persons Day.

Today is also the day we say, “Enough”! Today, we will #SpeakUp against violence against women!

Violence Against Women

In a previous post (read Lessons Learned by a Youth Peer Educator and A Twist in Her Story), I have discussed – in part, Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC). In the said post, I have enumerated the different types of violence against women: physical, sexual, psychological, and economic. I have failed to mention, however, that violence has also adapted with the developments in technology.

The internet has become an important tool for the youth – be it for something educational or entertainment. Sadly, the internet has also been a tool for oppression.

While there is no formal definition of electronic violence against women (eVAW) or technology-related violence against women yet, it is commonly recognized through the form it takes. It could either be cyberharassment, cyberpornography, or cybertrafficking.

The consensus, at present, is that it is a form of violence against women that uses technology tools like internet and cellphones. Watching “scandals” and “pornography”, and sexual innuendos sent via email and text, are all examples of eVAW.

With the rising cases of domestic abuse that involves physical, verbal, and emotional abuse among others, it is the time to be informed and be involved in the fight against violence against women. VAWC including eVAW is not acceptable and must be stopped.

Let us all say ENOUGH. Let us #SpeakUp, say NO to violence against women!
